The Association between Common Measures of Stretch- Shortening Cycle Function
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between common measures of stretch shortening cycle function during a drop jump. Fifteen males from team sports performed three drop jumps from a height of 0.3 m onto a force platform. Ground contact time (CT), flight time (FT), height jumped (HJ), reactive strength index (RSI), reactive strength ratio (RSR) and vertical leg-spring stiffness were recorded for each drop jump. Associations between measures were calculated using Pearson’s r correlations. Large negative correlations were found between CT vs RSR and CT vs Kvert. Large positive correlations were found between FT vs HJ, FT vs RSI, RSR vs RSI, RSI vs Kvert and RSR vs Kvert. The results suggest that although metrics of stretch shortening cycle function are related they appear to assess different capabilities within an athlete.

Objective: Stiffness is a characteristic of viscoelastic structures and is an effective factor in sports movement biomechanics, which is an important factor in motion production and neuromechanical control of human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between lower extremity stiffness and selected biomechanical variables during vertical jumps. Methods: 20 male physi...
متن کاملAssessment of Lower Limb Asymmetry: Differences during Isometric and Stretch-shortening Cycle Tasks
Assessment of limb function asymmetry is of interest to practitioners due to its role in return to play guidelines and reported links to injury. Dynamometry is one of the most commonly used methods of assessing muscle function, but the mode of contraction used is different to the stretch-shortening cycles experienced during real-life activities. The aim of this study was to compare measures of ...

OBJECTIVES To describe stretch shortening cycle behaviour of the ankle and lower limb in patients with Achilles tendinopathy (AT) and establish differences with healthy volunteers. DESIGN Between-subjects case-controlled. METHODS Fifteen patients with AT (mean age 41.2±12.7 years) and 11 healthy volunteers (CON) (mean age 23.2±6.7 years) performed sub-maximal single-limb hopping on a custom...
متن کاملStretch-shortening cycle: a powerful model to study normal and fatigued muscle.
Stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) in human skeletal muscle gives unique possibilities to study normal and fatigued muscle function. The in vivo force measurement systems, buckle transducer technique and optic fiber technique, have revealed that, as compared to a pure concentric action, a non-fatiguing SSC exercise demonstrates considerable performance enhancement with increased force at a given sh...
متن کاملShortening‐induced force depression is modulated in a time‐ and speed‐dependent manner following a stretch–shortening cycle
The steady-state isometric force following active muscle shortening or lengthening is smaller (force depression, FD) or greater (residual force enhancement, RFE) than a purely isometric contraction at the corresponding length. The mechanism underlying these phenomena is not explained within the context of the cross-bridge theory, with few studies investigating the effects of FD and RFE in stret...
